At Melba, our English program aims to develop students’ ability to read, view, speak, listen to, write, create and reflect on increasingly sophisticated texts with purpose and confidence. Students explore complex issues and learn to critically analyse and evaluate a range of spoken, written and multimodal texts, developing the skills needed to become active and informed citizens.
Reading is an integral element of success in English. Students are encouraged to read widely and class time is devoted to expanding students’ reading choices and nurturing a lifelong appreciation of literature. We also recognise that strong written skills are essential for success. In their writing folios, students experiment with a range of writing styles for a variety of purposes and audiences and develop an understanding of the structure and language features of specific text types.
At Years 9 and 10, students may pursue their passion for literature and creative writing by undertaking a range of electives which seek to enhance and extend students’ written and analytical skills in preparation for success in VCE English and Literature.
